Dr. Jorge Suarez’s research focuses on the identification and application of bioactive molecules relevant to human health, with particular emphasis on marine-derived compounds and innovative biological systems. In recent years, he has worked extensively with the black soldier fly larva, which he conceptualizes as a biological bioreactor capable of concentrating and transforming nutrients and functional molecules from marine and terrestrial sources, generating synergistic effects associated with health promotion and physiological resilience. These efforts are expanding toward direct applications in human health. A primary focus is the development of bioactive extracts with therapeutic potential for the treatment of chronic wounds, a condition with significant clinical impact. In collaboration with Dr. Daniel Benetti at the University of Miami Experimental Hatchery and the Dr. Phillip Frost Department of Dermatology and Cutaneous Surgery at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, Dr. Suarez is conducting initial studies to evaluate cellular mechanisms, inflammatory responses, and regenerative capacity. In parallel, he is investigating strategies to mitigate environmental risks affecting human health, particularly contamination associated with sargassum. Using the black soldier fly larva as a bioremediation model, he assesses its capacity to reduce heavy metals and contaminants, including inorganic arsenic. Additionally, he works on neutralizing and masking undesirable flavors and odors in fish meals derived from sardines and anchovy to improve their acceptance as protein sources for vulnerable pediatric populations, contributing to the prevention of childhood malnutrition and global food security.
