Dr. Caban-Martinez’s research investigates how environmental, and workplace exposures contribute to chronic disease. At the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, he is Professor of Public Health Sciences, Orthopaedics, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, and at the University-level, he serves as Associate Vice-Provost for Research Regulation, Integrity, Security and Evaluation. Dr. Caban-Martinez leads several federal and state-funded occupational health research programs focused on firefighter cancer risk, cardiometabolic disease, and environmental toxicants like PFAS and combustion byproducts. He also co-directs the DISPEL to HABs study with Dr. Kim Popendorf, a Florida Department of Health–funded initiative that examines disparities in exposure to cyanobacterial toxins from harmful algal blooms (HABs). His contributions span cohort development, biomonitoring, and the creation of community-centered toxin screening tools. A long-time collaborator with marine scientists, he began his work in marine biomedicine through the Center for Oceans and Human Health, studying the respiratory health effects of red tide. As a member of the Glassell Family Center, he aims to expand research on the health impacts of marine and atmospheric contaminants, particularly in vulnerable populations. His work is grounded in translational public health and committed to preventing disease through exposure reduction and environmental health equity.
