Dr. Lombard is a physician-scientist with broad interests in the relationships between human health, metabolism, and epigenetics. To achieve his goals, he leverages advanced approaches in metabolism and mitochondrial analysis. One major focus of the Lombard Laboratory is the sirtuins, a family of proteins that modify hundreds of targets in the cell to regulate metabolism, gene expression, and many other key processes. The Lombard Lab is evaluating one particular sirtuin, SIRT5, as a therapeutic target in melanoma and sarcoma. Another focus of our group is developing strategies to inhibit PAPPA, a protease linked to aging and cancer. Lastly, members of our team are exploring the epigenetic effects of heavy metal exposure, and whether epigenetically-guided therapies might represent new treatments for heavy metal intoxication. Our overall goal is to leverage basic science to improve the lives of patients afflicted with cancer and other diseases.
