Kim Popendorf is an Associate Professor at the Rosenstiel School of Marine, Atmospheric and Earth Science in the Department of Ocean Sciences. As a chemical oceanographer she focuses on the role of microbes in the chemistry of the ocean, specializing in the measurement of targeted biochemicals in the environment to investigate microbial processes including nutrient cycling, bacterial growth rates, and microbial metabolic energy rates. A branch of her research focuses on harmful algal blooms (HABs), particularly freshwater cyanobacteria blooms, where she investigates the intersection of HABs and human health including the aerosolization of HAB toxins and their impacts on health. Her lab has current projects investigating HABs and human health in Florida, and prior collaborative projects studying HABs in California, North Carolina, and other HAB-impacted areas, as well as open ocean project on microbial biogeochemistry.
